BOSTON, Mass. - Freshman goaltender Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) made 39 saves, while classmate Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) scored two goals to lead the Providence College men's hockey team to a 4-2 upset victory over second-ranked Boston University Tuesday night at Agganis Arena. It marked PC's first win over BU since November 17, 2006. It also marked PC's third consecutive triumph.
The Friars jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 9:30 mark of the first period when junior Chris Eppich (Surrey, B.C.) scored his third goal of the season. Eppich took a long feed and skated in on a breakaway before firing a wrist shot off the left post and into the net. Senior Matt Taormina (Washington Township, Mich.) and freshman David Brown (Centennial, Colo.) assisted on the goal. The Terriers took advantage of their first power-play chance of the night and evened the score (1-1) at 15:50 when Brandon Yip recorded his 10th goal of the season.
Bergland scored two second-period goals to give the Friars a 3-1 lead. After battling along the boards behind the net, sophomore Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) gained possession of the puck and set up Bergland right in front as PC regained the lead (2-1) at 8:24. Bergland scored again, this time on a two-man advantage at 12:08, to give PC a two-goal advantage.
The Terriers used a two-man advantage of their own to cut the PC lead to 3-2 just 21 seconds into the third period. Chris Higgins was set up right in front as he tapped in his 10th goal of the season. The Friars regained their two-goal lead (4-2) at 10:12 when O'Connor scored his fourth goal of the season. O'Connor stole the puck from a BU defenseman behind the BU net and came around the net before firing a shot that was saved by goaltender Grant Rollheiser. The rebound came back to O'Connor who scored on a back hander.
Beaudry, who was playing in his second collegiate game, finished with 39 stops, including several point-blank saves to help the Friars earn their first win over a ranked opponent this season.
The Friars return to action on Friday, January 16 when they travel to Amherst, Mass. to battle UMass.
