Sophomore Nick Cianci (West Hartford, Conn.) scored in the 16th minute to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 1-0 upset victory over fourth-ranked Boston College Monday afternoon at Glay Field. With the victory, the Friars improved to 2-0, while the Eagles fell to 1-1. It marked the second consecutive season in which the Friars defeated the Eagles. Last season, PC held off BC, 1-0, in Newton, Mass.
Providence created more chances in the first half and nearly took the lead in the 15th minute on a corner kick. Freshman John Raley (St. Inigoes, Md.) sent in a left footed bender to the back post and junior Timothy Ritter (Weston, Mass.) leaped and headed the ball just wide. However, the Friars struck just over one minute later as Cianci scored his first goal of the season. Ritter gained control of the ball at the right side of the box and dribbled around two BC defenders before firing a right footed shot that Cianci re-directed at the near post and into the net.
The Friars nearly struck again in the 59th minute when Ritter rifled a shot from 20 yards out that just missed wide right. The Eagles created several scoring chances in the second half, but were unable to score. In the 69th minute, Greg O'Neill was sent in on a through ball at the right side of the box, but his right-footed shot was blocked by a PC defender. Edvin Worley tried to score the equalizer in the 78th minute, but his header off a set piece was saved by Providence netminder Timothy Murray (Haverhill, Mass.). It was Murray's lone save as he earned his 10th career clean sheet.
The Friars finished with an 8-4 shot advantage, including, 5-0, in the first half. Providence is back in action on Saturday, September 6 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Holy Cross at 7:00 p.m.
