Providence College Athletics Holds Ninth Annual Friar Golf Classic

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College Department of Athletics held the Ninth Annual Friar Golf Classic on Monday, June 2, 2008 at Warwick Country Club in Warwick, R.I. The event was sponsored by Cox Sports, Sovereign Bank, First American Mortgage Guarantee & Title, and Hurley of America. On the day, more than $100,000 was raised to benefit the Friars Forever Athletic Fund, which directly supports the student-athletes and athletics department of Providence College.
A total of 131 golfers participated in the 2008 Friar Golf Classic, which had a shotgun-start time of 1:00 p.m. All golfers received a Samsonite garment bag, complete with a Nike golf shirt, Friars T-shirt, and Friars cap for participating in the tournament. While on the course, golfers could sample fare from The Capital Grille, Hemenway's Seafood Grill & Oyster Bar, and Gasbarro Wines.
Along with College President Rev. Brian J. Shanley, O.P. and Athletic Director Robert Driscoll, former Friar athletes such as Ernie DiGregorio, Otis Thorpe, Harold Starks, Donnie McGrath, John Butterworth, Joe Hulbig, and Wendy Cofran, men's basketball coach Keno Davis, and women's ice hockey coach Bob Deraney also took to the links. Other former athletes at the event were Ryan Gomes, Llewellyn Cole, Donnie Brown, and Herbert Hill, as well as women's basketball coach Phil Seymore and men's ice hockey coach Tim Army.
Following the golf outing, 175 competitors and spectators were invited to a dinner and live auction. The auctioning block included prizes such as: tickets to Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots games; signed memorabilia from the 2007-2008 Boston Celtics, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, defensive end Richard Seymour, Hall-of-Famer Andre Tippett, and linebacker Jerod Mayo; floor seats to a Friars men's basketball home game, as well as a charter flight and tickets for a Friars men's basketball away game during the 2008-2009 season; and an original canvas painting of Marvin Barnes, Ernie DiGregorio, and Jimmy Walker titled "Three of a Kind: Friar Legends Forever."
