AMHERST, Mass. -- The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated, 9-4, at Massachusetts Friday night in a wild Hockey East game at the Mullins Center in Amherst, Mass. It marked the most goals scored by the Minutemen since 1996.
The Friars (2-3, 0-3 Hockey East) scored twice in the first 8:16 to take a 2-0 lead. Junior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) struck first at the 5:31 mark to give PC the early edge. It marked John Cavanagh's team-leading third goal of the season as linemates Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) and Matt Bergland (Faribault, Mass.) assisted on the goal. O'Connor then scored his second goal of the season as he re-directed a shot from junior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) as the Friars jumped out to a two-goal lead. However, the latter half of the first period belonged to the Minutemen (3-1-1, 1-0-1 Hockey East) as they scored three times in the final 6:29 to take a 3-2 lead after one period. Alex Berry cut the lead to 2-1 at 13:31, before Chris Davis tallied the equalizer at 17:37. Then with 43 seconds remaining, UMass took the lead when Michael Lecomte connected on his second goal of the season.
The Friars came right back in the with two goals in the first 2:08 of the second period to take a 4-3 lead. Sophomore Austin Mayer (Providence, R.I.) setup senior Nick Mazzolini (Anchorage, Alaska) who rifled a high wrist shot from the bottom of the right face-off circle that beat UMass goalie Dan Meyers at 1:12. At 2:08, sophomore Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) slid a pass to freshman Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) who scored his first goal of the season from the slot. However, the Minutemen responded with two quick goals of their own to regain the lead (5-4). Berry scored his second of the night at 4:33 to even the score, while Chase Langeraap tallied his second goal of the season 12 seconds later. James Marcou and Cory Quirk each scored later in the period as the Minutemen led, 7-4, going into the third period. UMass added two more goals in the third period to seal the win.
The two teams will close out the two-game series Saturday night at Schneider Arena beginning at 7:00 p.m.
