PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by UMass, 5-1, Saturday night in a Hockey East game at Schneider Arena. The Minutemen scored two power-play goals in the second period to break a scoreless deadlock en route to their second consecutive victory over the Friars.
After a scoreless first half in which the Friars outshot the Minutemen, 9-7, UMass took the lead for good in the second period. Chris Davis scored a power-play goal at 4:39, while Michael Lecomte also scored on the man advantage at 8:42 to give UMass a 2-0 edge. Marc Concannon then increased UMass' lead at 12:30 with his first goal of the season, before the Friars got on a scoreboard as sophomore Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) also tallied his first goal of the season at 13:53 to cut the lead to 3-1. However, the Minutemen regained their three-goal at 18:08 lead as James Marcou scored from in close off assists from Alex Berry and Cory Quirk. Just Braun capped off the scoring at 14:26 of the third period with his first tally of the season and finish with a three-point night.
Paul Dainton made 24 saves for UMass to earn the win, while Chris Mannix (Hubbardston, Mass.) and freshman Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) combined to make 26 stops for PC
The Friars are back in action on Friday, November 7 with a home game against Vermont.
