PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team (17-10, 7-7) lost a 71-67 decision to Syracuse (20-8, 9-5) to close out its regular season home slate at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The loss marks just third defeat at home this season for the Friars.
Prior to the game, senior forward Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) was honored on senior day in front of sellout crowd. Hill followed the pregame festivities with a career-high 29 points to go along with 15 rebounds and eight blocks. The Friar senior connected on 13-of-16 shots from the field.
Sophomore guard Sharaud Curry (Gainsville, Ga.) was the only other PC player to score in double figures with 14 points.
The Friars outrebounded the Orange 51-38. The last time PC recorded 50 or more rebounds was against George Washington (11/26).
PC struggled to get going in the opening moments of the first half as it was held without field goal for the first four and a half minutes. Hill scored the Friars' first two field goals to pull PC to within four points at 12-8.
The Orange extended their lead to 27-18 to give SU its largest lead of the first half. The Friars respond as they went on a 9-2 run to close within two at 29-27.
PC closed out the half with an 8-4 run to take a 38-34 lead heading into the locker room. Hill led the way for the Friars as he scored 16 points and swatted six shots. The Friars also had received a strong first half performance from Curry as he netted eight points.
SU opened the second half by scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 41-40 lead. PC would retake the lead at 42-41 with just under 17 minutes to go in the game.
The Friars remained within striking distance throughout much of the second half trailing by no more than five points.
PC tied the game at 65 thanks to a 3-pointer by guard Brian McKenzie with 1:49 remaining, but the Friars were not able to retake the lead.
The Friars return to action on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. as they travel to USF.
