Stony Brook, N.Y. - The Providence College women's soccer team remained undefeated on the season as it battled to a 0-0 draw with Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Holiday Inn Express Invitational at Kenneth P. LaValle Stadium. The Friars move to 2-0-3 on the season, while the host Seawolves are now 4-1-1.
Junior goalkeeper Laura Elfers (Deer Park, N.Y.) made seven saves to post her third consecutive shutout of the season. For her efforts, she was named the tournament MVP. For the season, Elfers now owns a 0.35 goals against average, a .938 save percentage and has allowed just two goals in 509:57 minutes of action. Stony Brook goalkeeper Marisa Viola made a career-high 15 saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Seawolves.
Both teams started off the game slowly, combining for just four shots through the first 45 minutes of play. However, play picked up in the second half as the Seawolves outshot the Friars, 12-6. The Friars held an overall advantage in shots for the game, however, 18-15, and fired off 15 shots on goal while Stony Brook had just seven shots on net.
Three other members of the Providence squad were chosen to the All-Tournament team as freshman Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.), senior Leah Vieira (Rochester, N.Y.), and sophomore Megan Mancerella (Rochester, N.Y.) were all honored in a postgame ceremony. Joining them on the All-Tournament team were Jackie Timmes, Krista Shilts, and Kristin Mishrell of Stony Brook, Ashley Ventura and Marissa Gross of Towson, and Mary Kate Erdman and Megan Hillin of Lafayette.
The Friars will return to action next Friday, September 15, when they travel to play at Connecticut in their BIG EAST opener.
