PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Monday, November 6 that the Providence College men's soccer squad was one of 48 teams selected to participate in the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Friars will play Hofstra on Friday, November 10 at 7:00 p.m. in Hempstead, N.Y.
Providence College was one of 26 at-large teams selected for the Tournament. It marks the second consecutive season and third overall that the Friars have earned a NCAA Tournament berth. Last season, the Friars also faced Hofstra in the first round and defeated the Pride, 1-0, before falling to North Carolina in the second round.
Providence is enjoying one of its best seasons. The Friars are 13-6-0 overall, including a 7-4-0 mark in BIG EAST action. The 13 wins is one shy of tying a school record for most wins in one season, while the seven conference victories set a school record. PC finished fourth in the BIG EAST Blue Division and advanced to the BIG EAST Championship semifinals for the third time in the last four seasons, including the last two years. The Friars defeated fifth-seeded Louisville, 2-0, on October 25 in the First Round and upended top-seed Cincinnati, 2-0, on October 28 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinals, the Friars were defeated, 2-0, by eventual BIG EAST Tournament Champion St. John's.
Providence and Hofstra will face each other for the second time ever with the other meeting coming in the NCAA Tournament. Hofstra, which won the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament for the third consecutive season with a penalty-kick shootout triumph over George Mason on November 5, has posted an 11-5-3 mark this season. The Pride recorded a 7-3-1 mark in league play and finished in second place.
Providence is one of seven BIG EAST teams selected to the Tournament (Cincinnati, Connecticut, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. John's, West Virginia). In addition to facing all six BIG EAST teams this season, other teams selected to the Tournament that Providence played were Brown and Rhode Island . The Friars have recorded a 3-6-0 mark this season against teams in the NCAA Tournament. All six of the Friar losses this season were to teams that earned a berth in the field of 48 (Connecticut, Notre Dame, St. John's - twice, Rhode Island, West Virginia).
