PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team opened its 80th season of play with a 96-71 win over Fairleigh Dickinson University on Tuesday, November 14 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Senior Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.) had a game-high 22 points in 23 minutes of action to lead the Friars.
The Friars came out flying, opening up a 17-6 lead in the first five minutes of play. The Friars never looked back as they led the entire way. When Hill made a layup with 12:06 remaining in the first half to give PC a 10-point margin (21-11), the Friars' lead did not dip below double digits the remainder of the game. The Friars entered halftime with a 29-point lead, as sophomore Geoff McDermott (14 points), sophomore Sharaud Curry (13 points) and Hill (12) all scored in double figures.
In the second half, PC's lead peaked at 34 points with 15:21 remaining in the game. Fairleigh Dickinson chipped away at the lead as the action got sloppy at times, but the Knights could not get the deficit under 20 in the final 20 minutes of play. Friar Head Coach Tim Welsh used all 11 players that were dressed for the game.
In addition to Hill's 22 points, Curry (18 points), McDermott (16 points) and sophomore Weyinmi Efejuku (13 points) all scored in double digits. McDermott and Curry also each added seven assists in the game.
Andre Harris led Fairleigh Dickinson with 17 points and Jordan Ingram had a game-high 11 rebounds.
With the win the Friars improved to 70-10 all-time in season openers.
Providence will return to action on Saturday, November 18 against cross-town rival Brown at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunkin' Donuts Center.
