PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's soccer team will play Brown University in a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 10 at 3:00 p.m. at PC's Glay Field. The Friars are seeking their first win over Brown since 1993.
The Friars (9-3, 6-2 BIG EAST), ranked 23rd in this week's College Soccer News National Poll, enter Tuesday's match after a thrilling 2-1 overtime BIG EAST victory against Pittsburgh on Saturday, October 7. With the win, the Friars earned their ninth triumph of the season, their best mark since 1998. In addition, it marked PC's sixth conference triumph, which matched a team record that was established in 1998. Freshman Jonathan Medcalf (Tulsa, Okla.) tied the match in the 65th minute with his team-leading sixth goal of the season, while junior Alex Bury (Shrewsbury, Mass.) tallied the winner in the 96th minute as the Friars won their first BIG EAST overtime game since 2000. Medcalf leads the team in scoring with six goals and Bury is second with four goals and two assists. In goal, senior tri-captain Chris Konopka (Toms River, N.J.) has started 11 of the 12 matches and has a 0.81 goals against average and an .812 save percentage.
The Friars are 5-14-6 all-time against the Bears. Last season, PC and Brown played to a 1-1 tie. Kevin Neumen (Miller Place, N.Y.) scored his first collegiate goal to give the Friars a 1-0 lead, but the Bears' Andrew Daniels evened the score with 9:45 remaining in regulation.
The Bears (8-1-1, 2-0-1 Ivy League), ranked 18th in this week's College Soccer News National Poll, are unbeaten in their last six matches, including their most recent 2-1 overtime win at Princeton on Saturday, October 7. Trailing, 1-0, with less than 10 minutes left in the second half, Dylan Sheehan scored an unassisted goal and Rhett Bernstein capped off the comeback with a goal 6:18 into the first overtime to lead the Bears. Brown goalie David Semenza made two saves in the win. Berstein leads the team in scoring with five goals, while Andrew Daniels is second with three goals and three assists.
