Seton Hall Rallies To Defeat Friars In Women's Basketball

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Seton Hall, 69-59, in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, January 18 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. The Friars held a 30-23 lead at halftime, but the Pirates rallied to out-score PC, 46-29, in the second half to take the win.
Providence junior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Friars with 20 points, while freshman Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) grabbed a career-high 14 rebounds. Fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) added 17 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) rounded out the Friars' double-digit scorers with 14 points.
Shantel Brown paced Seton Hall with a game-high 22 points. Monique Blake and Heta Korpivaara netted 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Amber Harris recorded 14 rebounds for the Pirates.
Seton Hall recovered from a seven-point halftime deficit to take a 38-37 lead over the first four minutes of the second half, and pushed it's lead to five (44-39) with 14:45 remaining on the clock. The Friars responded with a 9-1 run to take a 48-45 lead at the 10:21 mark. Seton Hall regained the lead with an 8-0 scoring run of it's own to take a 53-48 lead with 6:11 left in the game. Snyder hit a three for Providence to stop the run and cut the lead to two (53-51), but it was as close as the Friars would get the rest of the way. Seton Hall closed out the game with a 16-8 scoring advantage.
Providence College (6-10, 1-4 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, January 21 against BIG EAST foe South Florida. The game will be played at the Sun Dome in Tampa, Fla. at 7:00 p.m. The match-up will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools in women's basketball. Providence returns to Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium for a two-game home stand against St. John's (Wednesday, January 25) and Syracuse (Saturday, January 28).
