PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to St. John's, 72-50, in BIG EAST Conference action on Wednesday, January 25 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Angela Clark led all scorers with 23 points for St. John's, who improves to 16-3 overall and 6-2 in the BIG EAST. The Friars were paced by freshman Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.), who narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds.

The Friars kept the game within five points over the first 11:02 of the opening half (17-12). The Red Storm finished the first half with a 19-8 scoring advantage to take a 36-20 lead at halftime. St. John's shot 51.9-percent (14-27) in the first stanza, including a four-of-nine performance (44.4-percent) from the three-point arc, while Providence struggled from the field at 31.3-percent. The Friars were 10-of-32 (0-10 from three point territory).

In the second half, St. John's led by as many as 29 points (60-31) with 8:58 left in the game. The Friars cut the deficit to 20 (68-48), but it proved to be as close as they would get the rest of the way.

St. John's finished the game 26-of-52 (50-percent) from the floor, including four-of-10 (40-percent) from three-point range. The Red Storm also knocked down 16-of-20 free-throw attempts on the night. PC finished the game 23-of-69 (33.3-percent) from the field, including four-of-26 (15.4-percent) from three. The Friars were 0-of-3 from the free-throw line. It marked the fewest attempts from the line on the season.

Kia Wright, Greeba Barlow and Danielle Chambers each contributed nine points in the win for St. John's. Chambers grabbed a team-best eight rebounds, while Barlow dished a game-high five assists.

Providence College (6-12, 1-6 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, January 28 against BIG EAST foe Syracuse. The game will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
