PITTSBURGH, PA. - The Providence College women's basketball team fell to Pittsburgh, 75-65, in BIG EAST Conference action on Saturday, January 14 at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. PC freshman Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) led the Friars with 14 points. Junior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) added 13 points.
Pittsburgh propelled it's way to a 13-point lead (24-11) with 6:42 remaining in the first half. The Friars responded with a 10-1 scoring run to cut the deficit to four points (25-21) at the 4:49 mark. The Panthers closed out the half with a 10-6 scoring advantage. Marcedes Walker netted seven of Pitt's 10 points in the final 3:30 to give the Panthers a 35-27 lead at the half. Walker finished the half with 13 points. Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) and fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) scored seven points apiece in the opening 20 minutes for Providence.
Pittsburgh opened the second half on a 10-5 run to take a 45-32 lead that forced the Friars to take a timeout at the 15:45 mark. Providence cut the lead to nine (47-38) with 14:10 on the clock and was then held scoreless for nearly five minutes, while Pittsburgh's lead swelled to 18 (56-38) with 10:52 on the clock. PC halted the Panther's run with a three-pointer from Marandola at 9:36 to make the score 56-41. Marandola's trey was the beginning of a 14-6 Friar run that got PC within seven (62-55) with 6:40 remaining. Pitt responded with a 9-2 run that pushed it's lead back to 14 (71-57) with 2:37 remaining on the clock. The Friars got back to within eight (71-63), but it proved to be as close as the squad would get the rest of the way.
The Panthers scored 32 points off of 22 Friar turnovers on the afternoon. PC had not recorded 20-or-more turnovers since the third game of the season on November 23 vs. Northeastern (25).
Joining Marandola and Snyder in double figures was freshman Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) who chipped in 11 points. Darrian and Nwafili each grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Walker finished the game with 25 points. Mallorie Winn added 19 points and Maddy Brown came off the bench to score 11.
Providence College (6-9, 1-3 BIG EAST) returns to action on Wednesday, January 18 against Seton Hall. The game will be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium and is scheduled to tip-off at 7:05 p.m.
