Women's Hoops Falls At Georgetown, 79-67

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Georgetown, 79-67, on January 11 at McDonough Arena in Washington, D.C. The Hoyas snapped the Friars' five-game win streak. Providence falls to 6-8 overall (1-2 BIG EAST), while Georgetown improves to 8-6 (1-2 BIG EAST). Junior Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) led the Friars with 19 points. Fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) posted a double-double for PC with 17 points and 10 rebounds.
In the first half, the Hoyas took an early 6-0 advantage and maintained their lead until the 7:03 mark when Nwafili got a put-back to give the Friars their first lead at 21-20. Bethany LeSueur hit two free-throws to regain the lead at 6:41 to make the score, 22-21, in favor of Georgetown. Nwafili made one of two free throws for PC to tie the game, 22-22, with 5:33 left in the half. Kristin Heidloff broke the tie with a jumper to give Georgetown a 24-22 lead at the 3:58 mark. Heidloff's bucket was the beginning of a 10-5 run to finish the half. The Hoyas took a 32-27 lead into halftime. Nwafili led the Friars with eight points and eight rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Kieraah Marlow netted 16 first-half points for Georgetown.
The Friars opened the second half on a 5-0 run to tie the game at the 19:01 mark (32-32). Marlow broke the tie with a lay-up (34-32) and the Hoyas never looked back. Georgetown gained it's first double-digit lead (50-39) with 12:36 remaining in the game. The Friars got as close as eight points on three occassions. The last time PC got within eight was at the 6:59 mark, with the score showing 62-54. Georgetown responded with an 9-2 run to take it's largest lead of the game (15 points) with 4:03 left to play (71-56). The Hoyas maintained a lead of no fewer than 10 points the rest of the way.
Marlow and LeSueur combined to score 49 of the Hoyas' 79 points. Marlow led all scorers with 25 and LeSueur added 24 points. Heidloff finished the night with 11 points. Georgetown shot 60.9-percent in the second half (14-23) and finished at 48.9-percent from the field for the game (27-56). The Hoyas also connected on 21-of-25 free throw attempts.
Freshman Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) scored 13 points for the the Friars before fouling out late in the second half. Fellow freshman Shantee Darrian (Trenton, N.J.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and chipped in seven points. Providence out-rebounded Georgetown, 37-35.
Providence College (6-8, 1-2 BIG EAST) returns to action on Saturday, January 14 against Pittsburgh at 2:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. The Friars' next home game is scheduled for Wednesday, January 18 against Seton Hall at 7:00 p.m. The game will be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium.
