PROVIDENCE, R.I. - It was announced on Sunday, March 6 that Providence College men's basketball freshman center Randall Hanke (New York, N.Y.) earned BIG EAST men's basketball rookie of the week honors and senior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) earned BIG EAST men's basketball player of the week honors for their performances in a 2-0 week for the Friars.
Hanke posted back-to-back double-doubles, coming off the bench and averaged 17.5 points per game, 12.5 rebounds per game and 4.0 blocks per game. Hanke matched his career-high with 17 points against St. John's and grabbed 13 rebounds to notch his first collegiate double-double. He followed that performance with a career-high 18-point, 12-rebound game at Georgetown yesterday. For the week, Hanke converted 15 of his 19 attempts (78.9%) from the field and earned the first BIG EAST award of his career.
Gomes averaged 24.5 points per game and 6.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week including a game-winning three-point play with 1.8 seconds left to give PC a 68-65 win at Georgetown on March 5th.
This marks the third time this season Gomes has earned the honor as he also was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Dec. 27 and Feb. 14. It also marks the eighth time during his career he has won the award, tops among current BIG EAST players and the most ever by a men's basketball player from Providence. Former Friar Jamel Thomas had won the honor six times during his career.
Gomes, a nine-time All-America selection and 2004-05 BIG EAST Conference Preseason Player of the Year, led the BIG EAST in scoring with 21.7 points per game this year. He also posted the highest figure in conference play with 23.2 points per contest. Those totals made him just the second Friar ever to accomplish the feat and first since Eric Murdock who led the league with a 27.2 points per game average in 1991.
Additionally, Gomes finished third in the league in rebounds with 8.2 per contest, and has posted 40 double-doubles during his career, including six this season. Gomes also has totaled 2,118 career points placing him first in school history, as well as 1,020 career rebounds which ranks fifth all-time at PC. He became the first Friar ever to surpass 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
The Friars' men's basketball team (14-16, 4-12 BIG EAST) returns to action against West Virginia in the first round of the BIG EAST Conference Tournament on March 9th. Televised live on ESPN, the contest is slated to tip-off at 2:00 p.m.
