PITTSBURGH, Pa. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the Pittsburgh Panthers in an exhibition matchup on Sunday, Oct. 19 at the Petersen Events Center in Pittsburgh, Pa. Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) led both teams in scoring with 19 points. Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas) registered a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.  
 
"It was a great opportunity for us to get back on the court this season," Head Coach Kim English said. "We got off to a great start and played well. I'm really excited to get back to Providence and rewatch the game to correct some things and get ready for Harvard in less than a week and Holy Cross on November third." 
 
FIRST HALF: 
Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) began the game with a layup of the opening tip. Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas) and Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) followed with three consecutive three-pointers that propelled the Friars to a 16-6 lead through the first four minutes of action (15:48).  
Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) capped off an 11-0 Providence run with an emphatic dunk on the fast break (14:02).  
• Pitt responded with a 6-0 scoring run and cut the Friar lead to 18-12 with 10 minutes left in the half.  
• Pitt made two three-pointers on back-to-back possessions and took their first lead of the game at 29-25 with under six minutes to play in the first half (5:19).  
• Pitt ended the half on an 8-2 scoring run over the last 3:26 minutes and took a 41-31 lead after the first 20 minutes of action.   
• Edwards led both teams in scoring 13 first half points.  
 
SECOND HALF: 
• Sellers began the second half with a three-pointer on an assist from Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria). 
Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) cut the Friars' deficit to nine with a coast-to-coast layup out of the under-16 media timeout. 
Stefan Vaaks scored five quick points, including a converted and one on the fast break, to cut into the Pitt lead (52-44).  
• The Friars entered the bonus eight minutes into the second half when Pitt committed its seventh team foul.  
• Jones got out in transition again and converted his second dunk of the game (10:27). 
• The Friars began to find a rhythm as Vaaks scored a mid-range bucket and Powell converted on a second-chance three-pointer to pull the Friars within three (6:22). 
• Pitt responded with an 8-0 run and extended their lead to 77-64 with under two minutes remaining.  
• Powell and Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) both connected on three-pointers in the last minute to keep the Friars within striking distance.  
 
HIGHLIGHTS: 
• Three players finished in double figures for the Friars: Edwards (19), Powell (17) and Sellers (11).  
• Providence controlled the rebound battle by a margin of five (43-38).  
• Powell recorded a double double with 17 points and a team game-high 10 rebounds.  
• Four players for Pitt reached double figures.  
• Pitt outscored Providence in the paint by a margin of 40-32.  
 
NOTES: 
• The Friars have posted a 68-25 mark all-time in exhibition games. 
• Today's contest marked the Friars' first game at the Petersen Events Center since January 25, 2012. 
 
UP NEXT: 
The Friars will host Harvard University in an exhibition game on Saturday Oct. 25 at The Amica Mutual Pavillion.
