PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's basketball team snapped an 18-game losing streak with a 74-53 victory over Yale on Monday, November 21 at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. Freshman Chelsea Marandola (Johnston, R.I.) led the way for the Friars with her first collegiate double-double. She tallied 19 points and 12 rebounds to go along with two steals and one assist. The victory also gave Phil Seymore his first win as a collegiate head coach.
The Friars never trailed in the game and went to the locker room at halftime with a commanding 43-14 lead. In the second half, the Friars led by as many as 28 points (51-23) with 16:41 remaining in the game. Yale trimmed the lead to 17 points (51-34) with 14:12 left on the clock with an 11-0 run, but it proved to be the closest they would get the rest of the way.
Providence shot a blistering 49.1-percent from the field as they connected on 27-of-55 attempts from the floor. PC also shot 37.5-percent from three-point territory (3-8) and 70.8-percent from the foul line (17-24). The Friars also out-rebounded Yale, 45-18. Three Bulldogs hit for double figures in the game, led by Kaitlin Emmerling's 17 points. Sara McCollum and Kaitlyn Lillemoe scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively. McCollum and Lillemoe each pulled down a team-high four rebounds. Stephanie Marciano led the Bulldogs with three assists.
Joining Marandola in double figures for the Friars were senior Allie Gard (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and fifth-year senior Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.). Each scored 14 points in the victory. For Gard, it tied her previous career high, which she recorded twice in 2004-05. Nwafili narrowly missed her second-straight double-double as she finished the night with nine rebounds. She also registered a career-high five assists and added two blocked shots and one steal.
Providence (1-1) returns to action on Wednesday, November 23 against Northeastern. The game is scheduled to tip-off at 7:00 p.m. in Boston, Mass.
