PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each defeated UMass-Dartmouth Saturday afternoon on Senior Day at PC's Taylor Natatorium. The PC men (2-6) tallied a 152-119 victory, winning 10 events. The PC women (4-4) were led by sophomore Annie Nemeth (Kendall, N.Y.) who played a part in four first-place finishes and posted a school-record performance, winning the 200-meter breaststroke with a first-place time of 2:40.67. Overall, the Providence women captured a 164-131 victory winning eight events.
Nemeth's performance in the 200-meter breaststroke was the first Providence women's team record broken in seven years. Additionally, the second-year swimmer won the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2:17.08 and the 50-meter breaststroke with a time of 36.50. Nemeth also helped the Friars win the 200-meter medley relay. Comprised of sophomore Carolyn Rider (Freehold, N.J.), Nemeth, senior Alyssa Meleski (Southington, Conn.) and freshman Jessica McCarthy (Woodstock, N.Y.), the quartet posted a first-place time of 2:11.02.
Rider also played a part in a pair of first-place showings as she won the 50-meter backstroke with a time of 33.66. Freshman Amy Ryan (East Granby, Conn.) won the 800-meter freestyle with a time of 10:12.86, while sophomore Katelyn Flynn (Sinking Spring, Pa.) won the 200-meter butterfly with a time of 2:34.62. Flynn also won the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:57.96 and placed second in the 100-meter freestyle with a time of 1:05.27.
Meleski, who was honored before the meet as one of seven Providence seniors in the program, earned a second-place finish in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 29.90 seconds, a mere 0.74 seconds off the leader.
Providence men's and women's swimming & diving teams each return to action in Vermont this Saturday, January 29. The men will take on Saint Michael's College while the women will battle the Univ. of Vermont.
