PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's hockey team announced its annual team awards on Thursday, April 15 at the Biltmore Hotel in Providence, R.I. at the team's 2003-04 Awards Banquet.
Senior defenseman Stephen Wood (Sudbury, Mass.) received the Louis Lamoriello Award, which is given to the team's most valuable player, and the Plus/Minus Award as the team leader in plus/minus rating. Wood, who earned Hockey East First Team All-Star and New England Hockey Writers All-Star accolades, earned All-America honors on April 7. He became the 16th Providence College men's hockey player to earn All-America accolades and the first since Devin Rask (Parkside, Sask.) and Nolan Schaefer (Yellow Grass, Sask.) were honored in 2001. In addition, Wood is the first PC defenseman since Rob Gaudreau (Cranston, R.I.) in 1992 to be named All American. He finished third on the team in scoring with 29 points, including a career-high 11 goals. He led the team in power-play goals (6), short-handed goals (2) and plus/minus rating (+19). In addition, Wood, who posted seven multiple-point games, led all Hockey East defensemen in league scoring with 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists).
Sophomore goalie Bobby Goepfert (Kings Park, N.Y.) and senior defenseman Jason Platt (Portola Valley, Calif.) earned the team's Ron Wilson Best Defensive Player Award. Goepfert also received the Friar Award, which is given by the Providence coaches to the player they feel has done the little things that do not appear in the statistics. Goepfert posted a 15-9-3 record, a .919 save percentage and a 2.49 goals against average. Goepfert, who earned Hockey East Player of the Week honors on February 9 and also was named the league's defensive player of the week twice, posted two shutouts this season. Platt played in 34 games for the Friars and recorded two goals and five assists for a total of seven points. In addition, he posted a plus/minus rating of +9.
Senior forward Mike Robinson (Biggar, Sask.) was given the Thomas Eccleston, Jr. Award as the team's unsung hero. Robinson played in 33 games this season and recorded seven points (one goal and six assists).
Colin McDonald (Wethersfield, Conn.) received the Reverend Herman Schneider Award, which is given to the most valuable freshman. McDonald played in all 37 games and led all freshman in goals scored (10). He finished with 16 points, which ranked eighth on the team in scoring. In addition, he finished tied for third on the team with five power-play tallies.
Sophomore Nate Meyers (Maple Glen, Pa.) earned the Team Academic Award for having the highest grade point average on the team. Meyers, who earned Hockey East Academic All-Star honors in 2002-03, has recorded a 3.28 GPA in education. He played in 11 games and recorded one goal and two assists.
The Friars finished the 2003-04 season with a 16-14-7 overall record and a 7-11-6 mark in Hockey East play, which was good for fifth-place in the league.
