JAMAICA, N.Y. - The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by St. John's, 88-75, in BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, February 8 in Jamaica, N.Y. Junior forward/center Gayle Nwafili (Maplewood, N.J.) scored 18 of her team-high 23 points in the second half, but could not propel the Friars past St. John's. Nwafili also added 13 rebounds to record her sixth double-double of the season.
St. John's graduate student Kim MacMillan netted 23 points for the Red Storm on 8-of-14 shooting from the field, including 7-of-11 shooting from beyond the three-point arc.
The Friars held a 34-31 lead at halftime fueled by 10 first-half points from fifth-year senior Brooke Freeburg (Waterford, Pa.). St. John's led by as many as seven points (25-18) with 8:33 on the clock, but Providence closed out the first half on a 16-6 scoring run. Freeburg and freshman Shauna Snyder (Albuquerque, N.M.) scored six points each during the run. St. John's was led in the half by Kim MacMillan, who netted three three-point baskets for nine points. Providence shot 51.7-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes on 15-of-29 shooting. St. John's connected on just 13-of-33 attempts from the floor in the half (31.9-percent).
The Red Storm started the second half on an 8-2 scoring run to take a 39-36 lead. St. John's held the lead until Snyder hit a three-point bucket to tie the game, 52-52, with 8:36 left to play. At that point, the Red Storm regained their lead and pushed it to eight points (62-54) on a 10-2 run. PC chipped away to get within one point (66-65), but it proved to be as close as the Friars would get the rest of the way. St. John's pushed its lead to 10 points (78-68) on a 12-3 scoring drive with 1:07 remaining in the game and never looked back.
Freshman Jill Furstenburg (Whitehouse Station, N.J.) scored 14 points for Providence in the loss. Freeburg finished with 13 points, while Snyder netted a career-high for the second-straight game with 11 points.
Four St. John's players joined MacMillan in double figures. Angie Clark netted 15 points, followed by Kati Kurtosi (13 points), Danielle Chambers (12 points) and Nora Gyuris (10 points). Chambers led the Red Storm on the boards with nine rebounds.
Providence College (4-16, 0-9) will return to action on Wednesday, February 11 against Villanova. The game is scheduled to be played at PC's Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium at 7:30 p.m.
