NEW YORK (AP) - Dwight Brewington matched his career high with 23 points and Providence beat Michigan 72-63 on Friday in the third-place game of the Preseason NIT.
Brewington, a sophomore guard, also scored 23 points in the Friars' 79-67 loss to No. 1 Wake Forest in the semifinals on Wednesday night.
He and Gerald Brown, another sophomore guard, combined for all but three points of the 14-0 run the Friars (4-1) used to take a 56-46 lead midway through the second half.
Providence didn't have much time to enjoy the win at Madison Square Garden. The Friars took a charter flight after the game to Miami, where they play No. 23 Florida on Saturday afternoon.
Brewington had seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, with a 2-for-9 effort from 3-point range his only negative on the stat sheet.
Brown finished with 16 points and Ryan Gomes added 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Friars.
Dion Harris had 17 points for Michigan (3-2), which lost 61-60 in overtime to No. 18 Arizona in the semifinals. Courtney Sims had 10 points and 10 rebounds for the Wolverines, who committed 14 turnovers against Providence's 2-3 zone.
Gomes' 3-pointer with 11:28 to play started Providence's big run and the sophomore guards took over from there. Brewington had a 3 and a tip-in in the run, while Brown's three baskets were all fast-break layups, two on passes from Brewington after steals.
It was the second meeting between the schools. Providence registered its only win over a No. 1-ranked team when it beat Michigan 82-81 on Dec. 29, 1976.
