PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Providence College Head Coach Paul Pooley announced on Thursday, May 8, that student-athlete Tony Zancanaro (Trent, Mich.) has signed a national letter of intent to attend the College beginning in September 2003. Zancanaro becomes the seventh new player to join the 2003-04 Friar hockey roster.
Zancanaro, a 5-foot-6-inch, 165-pound center played for the Springfield (Mo.) Spirit of the North American Hockey League in 2002-03. In 54 games with the Spirit, he led the team in scoring with 18 goals and 38 assists for 56 points. Zancanaro, whose twin brother, Brad, plays at Boston University, played in the Top Prospects Tournament in December 2002.
Zancanaro played two seasons with the Spirit and was a two-year captain. Most recently, the Spirit retired his No. 5 jersey, becoming the first ever jersey to be retired by the Spirit. Zancanaro is the son of Peter and Leslie Zancanaro.
