Men's Basketball Defeats Global Sports In Exhibition Action, 77-63

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College men's basketball team opened its exhibition season with a 77-63 victory against the Global Sports All-Stars on Sunday, November 2 at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I.

The Friars used the same five starters that ended the 2003 season by winning eight of their last 11 games to start their first game of the 2003-04 season. Senior center Marcus Douthit (Syracuse, N.Y.), senior guard Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.), sophomore guard Donnie McGrath (Katonah, N.Y.), junior forward Rob Sanders (New London, Conn.) and junior forward Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) each returned to the starting lineup versus the Global Sports All-Stars. All five starters contributed and were helped by strong play off the bench by senior Abdul Mills (Brooklyn, N.Y.), sophomore Herbert Hill (Kinston, N.C.), senior Chris Anrin (Varmdo, Sweden), senior Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) and junior Tuukka Kotti (Forssa, Finland).

In the first half of action, the Friars were never able to pull away from the All-Stars. PC built a lead of seven points (29-22) with 6:26 remaining in the half, but led by the strong play of former Oklahoma State guard Maurice Baker, who had seven first-half points, the All-Stars trailed by three just points at half time (39-36). Gomes paced the Friars in the first half with nine points and three rebounds. Sanders added seven points and McGrath chipped in with six points on two three pointers.

PC's depth took over in the second half as head coach Tim Welsh used a steady rotation of 10 players. At 16:31, the game was tied at 44-44, but the Friars outscored the All-Stars, 33-19, through the remainder of the game to earn the win. Laksa had an impressive second half as he scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in the final 20 minutes of action.

Gomes finished with a game-high 18 points in 23 minutes of action. Kotti scored five points and recorded a game-high eight rebounds. Laksa and Anrin registered 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Adrian Peterson and Shawn Daniels each scored 13 points for the All-Stars.

Providence will return to exhibition action on Saturday, November 15 at 7:30 p.m. versus the USDBL at the Dunkin' Donuts Center at 7:30 p.m.
