SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) - Dustin Hellenga and Dawan Robinson scored 26 points to lead hot-shooting Rhode Island to a 89-79 win over Providence on Saturday.
Rhode Island broke out of a season-long slump, shooting 57 percent for the game and going 10-of-14 from 3-point range. Rhode Island (5-2) had made only 4 of 38 3-pointers the last two games and was shooting 19 percent on the season.
Rhode Island took the lead for good at 60-59 on a 3-pointer by Hellenga with about 10 minutes left. Less than a minute later, Brian Woodward drove the baseline, was fouled by Ryan Gomes, and hung in the air long enough to complete the layup. His foul shot made it 63-59.
Woodward added 19 points for the Rams.
Gomes hit a 3-pointer to bring the Friars within one, but Woodward hit a fallaway 3-pointer in front of his team's bench to push the lead back to four. Robinson's 3-pointer made it 69-62, and Providence got no closer than five points the rest of the way.
Gomes led Providence (3-1) with 25 points.
Both teams had no problems with each others' zone defense in a crisply-played first half, which ended tied at 42. Rhode Island hit five 3-pointers in the first half and Providence sank seven.
Rhode Island hosted Providence for the first time since 1972, and the game sold out before the season started.
