PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Sheiku Kabba's 3-point shot with 1:06 left in regulation time snapped a tie and lifted Providence College to a 75-71 Big East Conference victory Wednesday night over St. John's.
St. John's Marcus Hatten scored on a floater from the lane and tied the game at 69-69 with 1:27 left. On Providence's ensuing trip down court, Kabba buried a 3-point shot which gave the Friars (8-4, 2-0 Big East) a 72-69 lead.
After an exchange of turnovers, St. John's Elijah Ingram missed a free throw and Kabba was fouled during the ensuing scramble after the ball. Kabba nailed the free throws with 8.3 seconds left which clinched the Friars' school-record, fifth consecutive victory over the Red Storm (7-4, 1-1).
Kabba topped a quartet of Friars who scored in double figures with 14 points. Romuald Augustin and Tuukka Kotti added 13 apiece while Ryan Gomes chipped in with 12.
Hatten led St. John's with 30 points, five shy of his career-high. Kyle Cuffe scored a career-high 19 points while Anthony Glover notched 12 - all in the first half.
Augustin connected on all three of his 3-point shots in the first half which ended with Providence leading 40-36. The Friars then went on a 9-0 run early in the second half which upped their lead to 52-40.
St. John's countered by outscoring Providence 16-1 during a span of 4:34 and grabbed a 56-53 lead on Eric King's conventional three-point play.
The Red Storm outrebounded the Friars 40-28 with Cuffe pulling down a game-high 11 rebounds.
