The Providence College men's basketball team opened the season with an 83-64 win against cross-town rival Brown at the Dunkin' Donuts Center in Providence, R.I. on November 23. The Friars improved to 86-25 all-time versus the Bears and 7-0 all-time against Brown in season openers. Overall, the Friars improved their record in season openers to 66-10.
Providence had three players score 17 points in the win. Sophomore Ryan Gomes (Waterbury, Conn.) recorded a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Juniors Maris Laksa (Ventspils, Latvia) and Sheiku Kabba (Bronx, N.Y.) also added 17 points.
Providence held a 40-25 lead at halftime after Gomes sparked the offense with 13 points in 17 minutes of action. Brown came out strong in the second half and cut the lead to five points, 40-35, with 18:13 remaining in the game. That was as close as the Bears would get as the Friars went on a 14-4 run and blew the game open. Sophomore Tuukka Kotti (Forssa, Finland) was impressive in the second half for Providence. Kotti scored 13 of his 15 points in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Brown was led by Jason Forte, who recorded a game-high 18 points in the loss.
Providence returns to action on Tuesday, November 26 against South Florida in Tampa, Fla. The game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and will be shown live on Fox Sports - Florida.
