Volleyball Prepares for Final Weekend of the Season

St. John's University Red Storm (15-16/4-7): After defeating Connecticut for the first time in the program's history, St. John's has dropped its last five BIG EAST conference matches. The Red Storm offense is led by freshman middle hitter Jackie Ahlers (Stony Point, N.Y.), who leads the BIG EAST Conference with 483 kills. Leading the Red Storm in digs and assists is Robyn Kurasaki (Milliani, Hawaii). The junior setter has recorded 289 digs and her 1,262 assists ranks third in the conference. St. John's defeated Providence last season, 3-0 (30-27, 30-13, 30-22), at Alumni Hall in Jamaica, N.Y.

University of Connecticut Huskies (13-13/8-3): Connecticut has won its last two conference matches and will play at Boston College on Friday, November 15 before coming to Providence. The Huskies are led by senior outside hitter Melissa Wooley (Ridgecrest, Calif.). She has 363 kills, 212 digs, and 37 blocks on the season. Freshman middle hitter Megan Crawley (Georgetown, Texas) was named Co-BIG EAST Rookie of the Week this past week. She recorded 13 kills in Connecticut's two matches last weekend, including a career high 10 kills in a victory over Rutgers on Sunday, November 10. The Huskies' primary setter is junior Julie Erbez (Stockton, Calif.), who has recorded a team-high 1,016 assists, along with 230 digs and 52 blocks. Connecticut stands in a three-way second place tie in the BIG EAST standings with Miami and Virginia Tech . Last season, Connecticut defeated Providence, 3-0 (30-21, 30-23, 30-27), at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.

Providence College Friars (2-27/0-11): The Friars look to win their first BIG EAST match of the season as they host St. John's and Connecticut on November 16 and 17. This weekend's matches will mark end of the regular season and the final two matches for seniors Sandy Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.), Susan Fanning (East Amherst, N.Y.), and Daniella Miele (Huntington, N.Y.). The Providence offense is led by sophomore middle blocker Ayana Cadres (Los Angeles, Calif.), who has team-high numbers with 343 kills and 46 blocks. Sharing the setting duties are freshman Rachel Tucker (Burleson, Texas) and Susan Fanning. They lead the Friars in assists with 534 and 366, respectively.
