BOSTON - Stephen Wood scored the game-winning goal with 11:32 remaining in the third period to give Providence College the 4-3 victory over Maine in the semifinals of the Hockey East tournament at the FleetCenter.
Wood, a freshman defenseman, took a feed from Matt Libby and fired a slapshot from the top of the face-off circle that beat Maine goaltender Matt Yeats over the shoulder. It was Wood's third goal of the season.
Maine had a 2-1 lead after one period of play thanks to a pair of goals from Tom Reimann. The Friars goal was scored by Jon DiSalvatore that was deflected in on goal off the stick of a Maine defender.
Providence tied the game 2-2 in the second period as Peter Fregoe scored a power play goal after collecting a rebound of a Regan Kelly shot that missed the net wide. Maine regained the lead a little over a minute later when Robert Liscak scored his 16th goal of the season. Liscak took a pass in the slot from Todd Jackson and gave the Black Bears a one-goal lead with 10:27 remaining in the period.
The Friars responded with a goal late in the second period. Devin Rask took a feed from Cody Loughlean and fired a shot to the top shelf.
Providence goaltender Nolan Schaefer finished the game with 20 saves, while Yeats ended the game with 25 saves in the net for the Black Bears.
Providence advances to the championship game of the Hockey East tournament on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against Boston College at the FleetCenter. It is the first time the Friars have advanced to the Hockey East championship game since winning the title in 1996.
