PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team defeated St. John's University, 83-63, on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference contest in PC's Alumni Hall in Providence. The Friars won the battle of 1-8 conference schools, winning their second league game and moving to within one spot in the standings of qualifying for the 2001 BIG EAST Tournament.
The Friars (8-12 overall/2-8 BIG EAST) used the strong inside-outside play of seniors Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) and Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) to take a 32-24 lead into the lockerroom at halftime. Roberts led all scorers with 10 points in the first 20 minutes of play, and classmate Gombotz added eight points to help Providence to its eight-point lead.
St. John's (6-15 overall/1-9 BIG EAST) cut the Friars' lead to just 10 points with 16:03 remaining in the game when LaTasha Thompson hit a fast break layup to cut the lead to 42-32.
The Friars would cruise from there on out, though, extending their lead to as much as 16 points on a 20-4 run over nine minutes to hold a 62-46 lead with 7:06 to play. Providence closed the contest and finished with the game's largest margin, 20 points, on eight consecutive points by PC freshman Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.).
The Friars had five players reach double figures in points, and were led by Roberts and Quinn, who each totalled 19 points. Roberts added six rebounds, two assists and a steal in 33 minutes and Quinn chipped in with four assists and two rebounds in 25 minutes. Gombotz added 14 points for the Friars and had six rebounds, three assists, three steals and a blocked shot. Freshman Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) added 13 points off the bench and had five rebounds and a blocked shots in 13 minutes. Finally, junior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) had 10 points, eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
St. John's was led by Rasheedah Brown, who scored a team-high 18 points in the defeat.
Providence returns to action on Saturday, when they play at #13th-ranked Rutgers University. Game time is at 2:00 p.m.
