PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Junior Jennifer Chin (Norwood, Mass.) and senior Maggie Hoffmann (Southbury, Conn.) scored two goals each to lead the Providence College field hockey team to a 6-0 win against Colgate University on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Friars earned their sixth shut-out victory of the season and improve to 10-5 overall.
Chin started the Providence scoring attack at the 27:22 mark of the first half, unassisted. Senior Katie Willett (Biddeford, Maine) scored approximately three minutes later (24:28) to make the score, 2-0. Willett was assisted by junior Lyndsey Brooks (New Fairfield, Conn.). Chin scored her second goal of the half at the 21:06 mark on an assist from Hoffmann, to give Providence a 3-0 advantage. Hoffmann then scored two-straight unassisted goals at 8:05 and 6:53 in the first to put the Friars ahead, 6-0.
In the second half, senior Kara Lukens (Pennsburg, Pa.) scored her first collegiate goal with 46 seconds remaining in the game, off an assist from Willett. It proved to be the only goal of the second half, and provided the Friars with the 6-0 win.
Sophomore Meaghan Moran (Framingham, Mass.) played the first half in goal for Providence. She faced only one Colgate shot and did not have to make a save. Freshman Meredith Jones (Lake Forest, Ill.) played the remaining 35 minutes of the game in the second half and registered two saves. Colgate goalkeeper Sara Corcoran played 57:47 in the game. She recorded 11 saves and allowed five goals. Jess DiRubio played the remaining 12:13 of the game. She allowed one goal and made five saves.
Providence will play at Brown on Wednesday, October 24 at 3:30 p.m. They return to Hendricken Field on Sunday, October 28 to play Maine at 12:00 p.m. The game against Maine will be the final home game of the season.
