PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Karim Shabazz had 17 points to lead four teammates in double figures as Providence defeated Pittsburgh 77-61 Tuesday night.
Also scoring in double figures for the Friars were Maris Laksa and Erron Maxey, with 15 each, and John Linehan with 14.
Providence (13-5, 4-2 Big East) defeated a Pittsburgh team that had defeated two nationally ranked teams, Seton Hall and Georgetown, in recent games.
Ricardo Greer had a game high 22 points for the Panthers. Pittsburgh (11-7, 3-4), trailing 51-42 in the second half, had a chance to close it to within 7 in the second half. But Julius Page missed a breakaway dunk attempt and then Providence's Chris Rogers connected on a 3-pointer.
Following a Panther turnover, Maxey had a dunk on a fast break to increase the lead to 56-42 at 10:59. The Panthers only got as close as 11 points the rest of the way.
Pittsburgh shot better from the field - 48 percent to the Friar's 39 percent. However, they were outclassed in rebounds, 38-27, committed 21 turnovers and made just four 3-pointers to the Friars' nine.
The first half was more competitive.
Romuald Augustin's 3-pointer at 7:21 made it 23-14 for the Friars' biggest lead of the first half, but Pittsburgh, behind Hawkins' 10 points and Greer's eight, cut the deficit to 33-29 at the half.
