PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Boston College, 76-66, in BIG EAST College action on Saturday, January 20 in Providence, R.I.
The Eagles (8-9 overall/2-4 BIG EAST) took control of the contest in the first half, opening up as much as a 13-point lead at 26-13 with 8:55 remaining in the half. The Friars (7-8 overall/1-5 BIG EAST) rallied to cut Boston College's lead to just four, 34-30 at halftime, led by PC senior Monika Roberts' (Pittsburg, Calif.) 11 first-half points.
BC used a 21-10 run over the half's first 12:23 to open a 16 point lead, 56-40. The Friars cut into the lead, and converted on their shots late while putting the Eagles to the foul line.
Roberts led all scorers with a season-best 23 points. Junior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) scored 12 points and senior Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) added 10 points and became the 24th Providence College women's basketball player to reach the 1,000 career point plateau.
The Eagles were led by junior Becky Gottstein, who scored 19 points. Center Jamie Cournoyer added 12 points and guards Janelle McManus (14 points) and Amber Jacobs (12 points) rounded out the scorers in double figures.
BC was effective in limiting the play of Providence's star freshmen, Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.) and guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.). Wilcox was just one-of-seven from the floor and scored four points while Quinn was zero-for-seven and also had four points.
The Eagles hit 25-of-53 shots from the floor (0.472) while the Friars hit 26-of-61 (0.426). BC outrebounded PC, 43-24, in snapping a four-game losing streak.
Providence returns to action on Thursday, January 25th when they face the 10th-ranked University of Florida Gators in Gainesville, Fla.
