WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 27, 2001)-- Lesley Walker (Silver Spring, Md./Wheaton) hit a jump shot at the buzzer as Georgetown defeated Providence in overtime, 72-71. The officials reviewed the play by instant replay and counted the basket to give GU the victory.

The Hoyas (12-7, 4-4 BIG EAST) trailed by five with 1:17 to play in overtime after Providence's Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) made a pair of free throws. GU cut the lead to three with just under a minute to play on a Rebekkah Brunson (Oxon Hill, Md./Oxon Hill) lay-in. Brunson scored again with 15 seconds to play to cut the lead to 71-70. Gombotz was fouled, but missed a pair of free throws, which gave GU possession and set up Walker's heroics.

Walker and Brunson each had double-doubles for the Hoyas. Walker had 14 points and 10 rebounds, while Brunson had 16 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. It was the most rebounds in a game for a GU player since Sylita Thomas had 18 rebounds in November of 1995.

Gombotz led Providence (7-10, 1-6 BIG EAST) with 20 points. Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) had 12 points and five assists, while Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) led the team with 10 rebounds.

Georgetown trailed most of the game and didn't take its first lead until the 5:31 mark of regulation. Walker tied the game at 61-61 with 1:29 to play on a jump shot and both teams were held off the board the rest of regulation.

Providence opened the game with a 17-2 run. Georgetown missed its first 14 shots and didn't have a field goal until the 10:54 mark. However, the Hoyas responded with a 16-2 run of their own. The Friars held GU to just 29 percent shooting in the first half. Providence was 8-for-18 from 3-point territory in the first half.

GU hosts West Virginia at McDonough Arena on Wednesday, Jan. 31, at 8 p.m.
