Women's Basketball Defeated By Virginia Tech, 65-54

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's basketball team was defeated by Virginia Tech University, 65-54, in BIG EAST Conference women's basketball action on Saturday, February 3rd in PC's Alumni Hall.
The Hokies (15-5 overall/6-3 BIG EAST) had four players score in double figures in the victory, their fifth in a row, and used a great free-throw shooting afternoon to their advantage, hitting 26-of-30 at the charity stripe versus Providence's eight-for-12 effort.
Virginia Tech's Tere Williams led all scorers with 18 points on seven-for-18 shooting from the floor. She added eight rebounds, three steals, an assist and steal in the Hokies' victory. Williams scored 11 of her game-high 18 in the first half when the Hokies finished the half with a 30-25 lead.
Virginia Tech's players in double figures were Sarah Hicks, who scored 12 points and added two assists, Chrystal Starling, who also scored 12 points and added two assists and a blocked shot, and Amy Wetzel, who scored 10 points and added two assists and three steals.
The Friars (7-12 overall/1-8 BIG EAST) were led by senior center Dani Trippany (Massena, N.Y.), who scored a season-high 15 points, grabbed six rebounds, dished out a career-best four assists and added a season-high four blocked shots. Classmate Jen Gombotz (Southington, Conn.) was the only other Friar who scored in double figures as she added 11 points on four-of-12 shooting from the floor. She added five rebounds, a steal and a blocked shot.
The Friars return to action on Wednesday, February 7th when they host St. John's University in PC's Alumni Hall. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
