BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) - Providence College beat Virginia Tech 75-60 on Saturday, racing out to a big lead midway through the first half and never really looking back.
It was just the third meeting between the Friars (12-5, 3-2 Big East) and the Hokies (7-10, 1-5) and the first since 1995.
Erron Maxey led Providence with 15 points. Tech was led by Danny Gathings with 16 points, all in the second half.
The Friars went on a tear after a Bryant Matthews basket brought Virginia Tech within two points at 11-9 with 11:42 left in the first half. Providence outscored the Hokies 12-0 over the next five minutes and 24-7 over the next ten.
Two Brian Chase baskets in the last two minutes allowed Virginia Tech to close the deficit to fifteen by the half, and Providence was up 38-23 at intermission.
The Hokies shot a paltry 28 percent from the field in the opening twenty minutes and turned the ball over nine times. The Friars shot 47 percent and gave the ball back to Tech five times.
Providence College started strong again in the second half, outscoring Virginia Tech 21-8 in the first 8:42 for their largest lead of the game-26 points. Eventually they were up by as many as twenty-nine.
