Box Score

MIAMI, Fla. -- The Providence College women's basketball team defeated the University of Miami, 77-60, Wednesday January 17th. It was the Friars'first BIG EAST Conference victory after beginning the league schedule 0-4.

Providence (7-7 overall/1-4 BIG EAST) led at halftime, 39-21, thanks in large part to the strong play of rookie center Jenese Wilcox (Port Chester, N.Y.), who hit all four of her field goal attempts for eight first-half points. Junior guard Chrissy Vozab (Amenia, N.Y.) added seven points in the first half as PC capitalized on Miami's inability to connect from the floor or the foul line as the Hurricane's hit just seven-of-26 (0.269) field goal attempts and six-of-12 (0.500) free throw attempts.

Miami (9-6 overall/2-3 BIG EAST) came out stronger in the second half, but the Friars were able to withstand the Hurricane's rally. Providence led by as many as 25 with 17:17 to play in the contest when Wilcox hit a baseline jumper, but Miami kept the pressure on the Friars.

The Hurricane's full-court pressure defense caused 23 Providence turnovers on the evening and with 10:56 Miami's Chanivia Broussard converted off a PC turnover to cut the Friars'lead to just 12 points.

The Friars continued to get the ball inside to Wilcox and senior Monika Roberts (Pittsburg, Calif.) and when they couldn? convert from in close, they two got to the free throw line. Wilcox hit her first four second-half field goal attempts to give her 16 points on eight-for-eight shooting. She finished with 16 onm eight-of-11 shooting and added two assists and three steals. Roberts had just one field goal, but connected on nine-of-10 shots from the charity stripe. It was at the stripe in the second half when Roberts hit career point numbers 999 and 1,000, becoming the 23rd player in Providence College women's basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau.

Rounding out the Friars who scored in double figures were Roberts, who finished with 11 points, Vozab, who had 10, and freshman point guard Kristin Quinn (Sewell, N.J.) who scored 14 points, grabbed seven rebounds and had three assists.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, January 20th when they host the Boston College Eagles. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at PC's Alumni Hall.
