PISCATAWAY, N.J. (AP) - Renardo Brown, who had scored just three points in nine games, hit two free throws to ignite a game-ending 21-11 spurt that led Rutgers to a 71-61 victory over Providence on Wednesday night.

Brown, who had only played 26 minutes all season, finished with 10 points as Rutgers (9-5, 1-1 Big East) beat Providence (8-8, 1-2) for the fourth straight time.

Dahntay Jones and Jeff Greer had 13 points apiece to lead the Scarlet Knights, while Joel Salvi had 11 and Todd Billet 10.

The Scarlet Knights also did an outstanding job holding Providence center Karim Shabazz scoreless on 0-of-6 shooting from the field and 0-for-5 from the foul line. The 7-foot-2 junior was averaging a team-high 17.5 points.

David Murray had 16 and Erron Maxey 14 for Providence, which scored the first nine points of the second half to grab a 39-34 lead. The Friars also had an 11-2 run to end the first half.

There were three lead changes and three ties over the next eight minutes of the second half, with Murray hitting a drive to forge the last tie, at 50, with 8:51 to play.

Brown broke that tie with his free throws as Rutgers scored eight straight points. Jones added two free throws - Rutgers was 18 for 20 in the second half - before Greer had a slam dunk after a steal and Salvi followed a Jones' miss with a layup for a 58-50 lead with 7:06 to go.

Providence, which was 3 of 11 from the free throw line in the second half, never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

Rutgers never trailed in the first half, scoring nine of the first 11 points and eventually building a 32-19 lead with 2:36 left in the half when Greer hit a 3-pointer.

Providence, which hit only 2 of its first 16 shots, got back into the game by using its press to finish the half with an 11-2 spurt, drawing within 34-30 on a tip-in just before the buzzer by Maxey that seemed to be offensive interference.
