PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Brooks Sales had 16 points and 14 rebounds to lead Villanova past Providence 66-57 Thursday night.
Brian Lynch added 14 points and Bobby Smith had 13 for Villanova (10-5, 2-2 Big East), which defeated the Friars in Providence for the first time in 10 years.
Erron Maxey scored 16 points and Karim Shabazz had 15 for Providence (8-9, 1-3).
Leading 32-27 at the half, the Wildcats went on a 23-7 surge to take a 63-48 lead with less than 4 minutes to go. The Friars never got closer than 9 points for the rest of the game.
Villanova controlled the backboards, outrebounding Providence 53-27.
Providence shot just 36 percent for the game, including 3-for-21 shooting from 3-point range. Villanova, meanwhile, shot 40 percent for the game and converted 14 of 20 foul shots.
Providence forced 29 Villanova turnovers - the most by the Wildcats in a game this year - but made only 19 points from them.
