Navigant Credit Union will partner with Friar Athletics to serve as the presenting sponsor for the 100th season celebration.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- As part of the celebration of the 100th season of Providence College Men's Basketball presented by Navigant Credit Union, Providence Athletics will recognize a Centennial Team honoring the players who have helped define a century of Friar Basketball. The Centennial Team will serve as one of the signature elements of the season-long celebration, giving generations of Friar fans an opportunity to help recognize the players who have shaped the program's history across five distinct eras.

"Over the last 100 years, Providence College has been blessed to have many great men's basketball players," Athletic Director Steve Napolillo said. "We are excited to have the support of our tremendous friends at Navigant Credit Union. We are engaging Friar fans in this unique fashion and we look forward to them helping us select the Centennial Team."

To develop the Centennial Team ballot, Providence Athletics worked with a committee featuring Joe Brum, Kevin McNamara, John Rooke, Mike Tranghese and Joe Hassett, bringing together individuals with longstanding knowledge and connections to the program. The group reviewed the pool of players and helped finalize the 100-player ballot before the process is opened to Friar fans.

Fans will have a direct voice in determining the final team. Fan voting will account for 50 percent of each player's selection score, with the committee accounting for the other 50 percent. The four highest combined selections from each of the five eras will earn a place on the team, with the next five highest combined scores completing the 25-member Centennial Team.

The 100-player ballot will be unveiled era-by-era beginning November 9, with fan voting opening on November 14.

Mike Tranghese – Former Providence College Sports Information Director and BIG EAST commissioner.  He helped establish the Conference alongside Dave Gavitt in 1979.

Joe Hassett – Friar Men's Basketball student-athlete from 1973 to 1977.  Selected by the Seattle SuperSonics in the 1977 NBA draft, where he won an NBA championship in 1979.  He was selected to the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame and has had his jersey retired by the Friars.

John Rooke – He has served for 40 years as the radio play-by-play voice for Providence College basketball and 33 seasons as the familiar "Voice of Gillette Stadium" for the New England Patriots.

Kevin McNamara – He covered college basketball, the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox and even some Bruins for over 30 years at the Providence Journal. Current host of the Bryan Hodgson Radio Show with Providence College Basketball. He hosts a sports talk radio show on 630 WPRO.

Joe Brum – He was hired as the College's first full-time alumni affairs director in December 1971. Over a decades-long tenure, he served as vice president for alumni and development and later as special assistant to the president.

As presenting partner, Navigant Credit Union will support the year-long celebration honoring the history and legacy of Providence College basketball. The campaign will spotlight legendary figures who have helped define the program and key moments in program history, including Providence's NIT championships in 1961 and 1963, NCAA Final Four appearances in 1973 and 1987, and BIG EAST Championships in 1994, 2014 and 2022. The anniversary will be anchored by three eras of Providence College basketball history.

"This partnership brings together two organizations with deep roots in our state and a shared commitment to community, tradition, and excellence. Navigant Credit Union is honored to help celebrate this historic milestone and to be part of a season that recognizes the people, moments, and achievements that have made Friar Basketball such an important part of Rhode Island's story," said Molly Pastore, FVP Marketing + Member Experience at Navigant Credit Union.

Providence College will open its 100th season of men's basketball on Monday, November 2 when the Friars host the Maine Black Bears.
