PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs earned their first win of the season with a 5-4 victory over the Providence College Friars in men's hockey action on Saturday, November 14 at PC's Schneider Arena.
Minnesota-Duluth got on the scoreboard first when Derek Derow knocked in a rebound past PC netminder Boyd Ballard at 8:20 of the first period. Heath Gordon evened the game when he knocked the puck through the legs of UMD goaltender Brant Nicklin at 11:53 of the first period. The Friars took their first lead of the game when Jerry Keefe converted on a two-on-one breakaway as he one-timed a pass from Fernando Pisani into the back of the net at 13:27 of the first.
The Bulldogs carried the play for the majority of the second period and outscored the Friars, 2-1, in the period to force a 3-3 tie after 40 minutes of play. UMD's Mark Gunderson tied the game at 2-2 when he stole the puck while forechecking and slid a low shot between Ballard's pads at 3:29. PC defenseman Jason Ialongo netted the Friars' third goal of the game with a blast from the point on a power play at 4:53 of the second. Rich Anderson tied the game for the Bulldogs when he tipped in a shot from the point at the 11:58 mark.
The Friars took an early lead in the third period when Jon Cameron backhanded a shot past Nicklin at 1:16. Jeff Scissons fired a low shot that found the back of the net to tie the game at 10:33 of the third. UMD's Colin Anderson tallied the game-winner when he one timed a shot from four feet in front of the net at the 15:31 mark.
Nicklin made 27 saves in the win for the Bulldogs. Ballard recorded 19 stops for the Friars
With the win, UMD raised its record to 1-6-1 overall, while Providence fell to5-3 overall.
Providence College will return to action against the University of Maine on Friday, November 20 at 7:00 p.m. at Maine's Alfond Arena.
