PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Four members of the 1999 Providence College baseball team have been selected to Collegiate Baseball's 1999 All-American teams.

Rightfielder KEITH REED (Jr., Yarmouthport, Mass.) and pitcher Marc DesROCHES (Sr., Cambridge, Mass.) have been selected to the newspaper's Second All-American Team while first year players MIKE SCOTT (So., Darien, Conn.) and NEAL McCARTHY (Fr., Warwick, R.I.) have been selected to the paper's Freshman All-American Team.

Reed, who was selected in the first round of last week's Major League draft by the Baltimore Orioles, adds to his storybook season with this honor. A unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection and All-New England choice, the junior led PC to its second BIG EAST Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional where the Friars lost in the championship game to Florida State.

For the year, Reed finished with a .398 average, 17 home runs and a school record 79 runs batted in. He stole 15 of 17 bases and closes his Providence career tied for first in career home runs with 36.

DesRoches was the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and the Most Outstanding Player in the BIG EAST Tournament where he won two games in helping PC to its second league title. The big righthander was 14-2 overall with a 2.86 ERA in 17 appearances. He led the Friars' staff with nine complete games and struck out a single season record 87 batters in 103.2 innings. Along the way he was also a First Team All-BIG EAST choice and a First Team All-New England selection.

Scott and McCarthy were a pair of first year players who played like seasoned veterans. Scott, who sat out last season with a knee injury, led the Friars with a .420 average and through June 5th led the nation with 120 hits and 13 triples. The BIG EAST Rookie of the Year, Scott had 21 doubles and hit five home runs with 64 rbi's as the Friars' leadoff hitter. He was also a First Team All-BIG EAST and All-New England choice, was selected to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team and was named to the NCAA All-Regional Team at Tallahassee, Florida.

McCarthy was named to the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team and was a Second Team All-New England selection as he hit .376 with 17 home runs and 69 rbi's along with 22 doubles. His 17 homers tied Reed for the team lead in that category and his home runs, rbi's and doubles are all PC freshman records.

The designated hitter/outfielder was named to the All-Regional Team at the NCAA Tournament as he led the Tallahassee Regional with two home runs and seven rbi's in four games while hitting .400. His tenth inning, two-out home run versus Jacksonville gave PC a 9-8 win and sent the Friars to the finals versus Florida State where they lost 14-3 to the Seminoles.

All four players played key roles in helping Providence College to its greatest season ever on the baseball diamond with a 49-16 record, a BIG EAST Title and a trip to the NCAA Regionals.
