PROVIDENCE COLLEGE (1-1-0) HOCKEY NOTES:
FRIARS FINISH SECOND AT ICE BREAKER TOURNAMENT... The Providence College Friars posted a 1-1 mark and finished second at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. on October 15-16. On October 15, the Friars opened the Tournament with a 2-1 win against Notre Dame. Sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) and sophomore Marc Suderman (Regina, Saskatchewan) both scored for PC. Junior netminder Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 30 saves and earned the game's No. 1 star in the win. The following night, the Friars were defeated by Denver, 3-2, in double overtime of the Championship Game of the Ice Breaker Tournament. Senior Doug Sheppard (Georgetown, Ontario) and freshman Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) each scored one goal for the Friars. Ballard made 33 stops in 84 minutes and 25 seconds of action.
BALLARD PLAYS STRONG IN NET... Junior goaltender Boyd Ballard (Weyburn, Saskatchewan) made 63 stops in two games at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. and posted a 1-1 record, a 1.66 goals against average and .940 save percentage. On Oct. 15, Ballard registered 30 saves and earned the game's No. 1 star in PC's 2-1 season opening win against Notre Dame. The following night, he made 33 stops in a 3-2 double overtime loss to Denver in the Championship Game of the Ice Breaker Tournament.
FREGOE PRODUCES... Sophomore Peter Fregoe (Massena, N.Y.) recorded one goal and one assist for the Friars in two games at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. On Oct. 15, Fregoe netted his first collegiate tally on a power-play in PC's 2-1 win against Notre Dame. On Oct. 16, he recorded one assist in the Friars' 3-2 double overtime loss to Denver in the Championship Game. Fregoe, who is playing his first season of college hockey, came to Providence after one of the most successful seasons ever in the USHL. Fregoe tallied 103 points last season for the Des Moines Buccaneers. For his efforts he was named USA Hockey's Junior Player of the Year, the USHL Most Valuable Player, the USHL Top Forward and First Team All-USHL.
DiSALVATORE NAMED TO ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM... Freshman right wing Jon DiSalvatore (So. Windsor, Conn.) scored his first collegiate goal in PC's 3-2 loss to Denver on Oct. 16 at the Ice Breaker Tournament. For his efforts, DiSalvatore was the lone Friar named to the Ice Breaker All-Tournament Team.
FRIARS IN OPENERS... On Ocober 15, PC defeated Notre Dame, 2-1, to start the 49th season of Providence College hockey. With the win, PC improved its record in season openers to 30-18-1. It was PC's first win in a season opener since a 7-2 victory against Army on October 18, 1996. The game also marked the first time in the history of PC hockey that the team has opened its season at a Tournament.
FRIARS' DEFENSE EARNS A KEY WIN... PC's 2-1 win against Notre Dame on October 15 marked the first time the Friars won a game in which they scored less than three goals since a 2-0 victory over Merrimack on February 8, 1998. Last season, the Friars were 0-10 in games that they scored less than three goals.
NEXT WEEKEND... The Friars return to the ice next weekend for two games against Miami University on October 22-23 in Oxford, Ohio. Both games will begin at 7:00 p.m.
THE PROVIDENCE-MIAMI SERIES... Friday's game will be the third meeting between the two schools. The Friars have recorded a 1-1 mark all-time versus Miami. Providence won the first game ever between the two teams, 8-1, on December 22, 1990 at Goggin Arena. Last season, the Red Hawks earned a 5-3 victory over the Friars at Schneider Arena on October 23, 1998.
PROVIDENCE VS. THE CCHA... Friday's matchup with Miami will be the Friars' second game versus a CCHA team this season. PC opened its season with a 2-1 win against Notre Dame on October 15 at the Ice Breaker Tournament in Denver, Colo. Providence opened last season with two home games versus CCHA opponents. PC was defeated by Miami, 5-3, on October 23, 1998. The Friars evened their overall record at 1-1 the following night with a 7-2 victory over Lake Superior.
PROVIDENCE COLLEGE VS. NON-LEAGUE OPPONENTS... This season, the Friars have compiled a 1-1 record against non-league opponents. PC has a 1-0 mark against CCHA teams and a 0-1 record against WCHA teams. In 1998-99, the Friars recorded a 6-4 mark against non-league opponents.
