Lou Parente begins his second season in Friartown in 2026-27. Parente became the third men's golf coach in Providence College history, following Waldo Martin and Joe Prisco.
The 2025-26 season marked the return of men's golf as a varsity program for the first time in 23 years. The Friars recorded their best team finish of the season with a fifth-place showing at the Bash in the Boro at the Georgia Southern University Golf Course on Oct. 14, 2025. During the event, freshman Will Spring carded the lowest round of the season for the Friars, shooting a six-under-par 66 with seven birdies. During the spring season, junior Campbell Skelly recorded the team's lowest round, shooting a five-under-par 67 at the Roar-EE Invitational with two eagles. In the program's first BIG EAST Championship since 2000, Providence placed 11th overall with a team score of 895 (+31). Skelly led the Friars with a tie for ninth place at four-under-par 212. He was tied for fifth after the second round following rounds of 69 and 71 to open the tournament. His opening-round 69 marked the lowest round by a Friar in BIG EAST Championship history. Skelly finished the tournament with 13 birdies and one eagle. The performance marked his second top-10 finish of the season and the first top-10 finish by a Friar at the BIG EAST Championship since Kevin Magner and Jeff Magee tied for 10th in 1994 in Avenel, Md.
Parente came to Providence College with 15 years of coaching experience. From 2005-2015, he served as the men’s golf coach at Johnson & Wales University. In 2015, Parente helped launch the women’s golf program at Johnson & Wales, serving as head coach for the men’s and women’s teams until 2020. Under his leadership, the Wildcats captured six Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championships and made four NCAA Championship appearances. Five of his players earned GNAC Player of the Year honors. Parente was named GNAC Coach of the Year five times.
In addition to his on-course success, Parente managed all facets of the program, including recruiting, player development, travel, budgeting, equipment procurement and social media. He also served as President of the New England Intercollegiate Golf Association and sat on NCAA Division III committees for national championships and regional ranking advisories.
