Fr. Mark Nowel enters his 11th season in 2025-26 working as the Men’s Basketball Team Chaplain. He provides spiritual guidance and religious services to players, their families, coaches, and team staff. As well, he helps student-athletes problem-solve as they strive to find their passions and overcome the obstacles that are associated with athletics, academics and life.

Fr. Nowel grew up in Union, New Jersey where he attended a parochial school staffed by Dominican sisters. Fr. Nowel completed a Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science at Georgetown University. Following his time at Georgetown, he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study developmental biology at University of Leicester in England where he completed his Ph.D, and as he describes “more importantly,” where he met the Dominican Friars.  He was then accepted into the novitiate class of 1980- along with Brian Shanley (PC’s former president).

Fr. Nowel arrived at PC in 1986, shortly after his ordination, to teach biology and assist the residence life office as a residence hall director. Since then he has continued to live in the student residence hall, taught in the biology department, headed the residence life office, been assistant academic dean, served as the dean of undergraduate and graduate studies and is currently the Associate Provost for Academic Policy and Mission Support. He has also moderated The Cowl and the Pre-Health Professions Honor Society, served as an NCAA Faculty Representative, and assisted in the parochial ministries of many parishes in the Providence area. Fr. Nowel is currently an associate professor for the biology department at PC, where his areas of expertise include cell biology and developmental biology.
