PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College men's basketball team was defeated by the No. 4 ranked University of Connecticut (15-1, 5-0 BIG EAST), 103-98 (OT), on Wednesday, Jan. 7 at the Amica Mutual Pavillion in Providence, R.I. With the loss, Providence falls to 8-7 overall and 1-3 in BIG EAST play. Sophomore Ryan Mela (Natick, Mass.) led the Friars, with a career-high 19 points. Freshman Jamier Jones (Sarasota, Fla.) also tied his career-high with 18 points for the Friars.
"Tough, tough loss for our guys." Head Coach Kim English said. "Credit to UConn for staying with it. We had some really unfortunate play down the stretch."
FIRST HALF:
• After UConn opened the scoring, the Friars got their first bucket on a Jamier Jones transition layup (18:52).
• Following the Jones layup, Jaylin Sellers (Columbus, Ga.) got one of his own to put Providence on top 4-3. Next PC possession Jones connected from deep for the first Friars three-pointer of the game (17:54).
• Providence owned a 7-3 lead at the first media timeout (16:00).
• Stefan Vaaks (Tabasalu, Estonia) put Providence in front 9-6 with an acrobatic finish at the rim. Next possession Vaaks drained a contested three to extend the lead to six (13:58).
• Jason Edwards (Atlanta, Ga.) knocked down a wide-open three off a feed from Cole Hargrove (Norristown, Pa) for his first points of the night to extend the Providence lead (11:50).
• The Friars held a 17-14 lead into the media timeout (11:16).
• Corey Floyd Jr. (Franklin, N.J.) sank a pair of free throws to end a UConn run and tie the game at 19 (8:46).
• Providence earned the lead back after Sellers made a drive to the basket, drawing a foul, and making both foul shots (8:19).
• Both sides traded baskets prior to the under-eight media timeout. The Huskies led 28-26 (6:46).
• After a missed UConn layup, Ryan Mela ran the fast-break and found Oswin Erhunmwunse (Benin City, Nigeria) for an emphatic two-hand jam (5:22).
• Providence then forced a UConn turnover, Floyd Jr. drove straight to the basket for a layup that put PC on top 34-30 (4:18).
• The Friars extended their run to 11-0 out of the timeout when Floyd Jr. hit a straight-away three (3:34)
• Edwards sent the AMP into a frenzy, knocking down his second three of the night to give PC it's largest lead, 42-32 (2:25).
• The Friars stayed hot from outside, Edwards found Floyd Jr. in the corner for another three, the PC lead grew to 47-34 (0:49).
•Providence led 47-37 heading into the locker room.
• Providence shot 16-27 (59.3%) from the field, 7-12 (58.3%) from three, and 8-8 (100.0%) from the free-throw line.
• UCONN shot 14-33 (42.4%) from the field, 9-16 (56.3%) from three, and 0-0 (0%) from the free-throw line.
• Floyd Jr. led all scorers with 12 points on 4-5 shooting
•Vaaks chipped in with eight points on 3-4 shooting.
• Braylon Mullins led UConn with 11 points
• Seven different Friars registered points in the first half.
•The 10-point halftime deficit was the Huskies largest this season.
•The 59.3% performance from the field was the highest in a first half for Providence this season.
SECOND HALF:
• The Friars were rewarded with two free throws after UConn head coach Dan Hurley was given a technical foul to end the first half. Sellers went 1-2 from the line to make it 48-37, Providence.
• On the first possession of the half, Jones found Erhunmwunse for a dunk to extend the Friar lead to 13 (19:50).
• Sellers drove to the basket and converted on an and-one floater to make it 53-40, Providence (17:45).
• Jones stepped in to his second three pointer of the night and followed it with a steal and fast break dunk to make it 58-47, Providence, heading into the first media timeout (15:14).
• Mela connected on two free throws after he was awarded a foul on a driving effort to make it 60-52, Providence.
• Out of the media timeout, Duncan Powell (Dallas, Texas) connected on a baseline turnaround jumper for his first points of the night to give the Friars the 62-55 lead (11:11)
• Mela was able to convert on an and-one layup from a baseline-out-of-bounds set on a pass from Floyd Jr. (10:29).
• Powell connects for his first three of the contest to extend the Providence lead to 11, 68-57 (10:09).
• Sellers found Mela for a three to make it 71-60, Providence, with under nine minutes remaining (8:54).
• Mela continued his hot hand after converting on a layup to give him 14 on the night, 10 in the second half, and to make it 73-60, Providence (8:24).
• Out of the media timeout, Mela went 2-2 from the line again to extend the Providence lead.
• Powell knocked down his second three off a Vaaks pass to put PC ahead 78-67 (6:57).
• Vaaks earned a trip to the line and converted two free throws to five Providence the 10-point lead with under five minutes remaining, 82-72 (4:35).
• Jones got out in transition and connected on a reverse layup that was followed up by a fantastic behind the back euro step layup to make it a 4-0 Providence run and to make it 86-75 (3:12).
• Floyd Jr. pulled down a massive offensive rebound and found Sellers on the kickout for three to make it 89-84, Providence (1:07).
• The game was tied at 89 at the end of regulation.
OVERTIME:
• After UConn scored on its first posession, Jones connected on his third three-pointer of the night to give the Friars the one-point lead, 92-91 (4:08).
• Edwards stepped back and converted on a mid-range shot to pull the Friars within one possession, 96-94 (2:41).
• After UConn went up six, Powell hit another three-pointer to pull the Friars within three, 101-98 (0:39).
• Final score UConn 103, Providence 98.
HIGHLIGHTS:
• Providence shot 32-64 (50.0%) from the field, 14-24 (58.3%) from three, and 20-27 (74.0%) from the free-throw line.
• UConn shot 35-71 (49.3%) from the field, 18-32 (56.3%) from three, and 15-18 (83.3%) from the free-throw line.
• The Friars finished with six players in double figures: Mela (19), Jones (18), Floyd Jr. (12) Vaaks (11), Sellers (11) and Powell (11).
• Mela finished with a career-high 19 points.
• Jamier Jones tied his career-high with 18 points.
• Mullins led all scorers with 24 points for UConn. Alex Karaban and Silas Demary Jr. both had 23 points and Tarris Reed Jr. added 20.
• Providence held the advantage in bench points, 41-3.
• Providence holds a 31-52 mark all-time versus Connecticut.
• The Friars have posted a 16-20 mark all-time versus UConn in Providence
