Providence College Student-Athletes Adopt Eaton Street

Oct. 2, 2003

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Under the direction of the Providence College Student-Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB), student-athletes from PC have reached out to the community, once again, and have adopted Eaton Street. Since the fall semester of 2002, the Student-Athlete Advisory Board has taken the initiative and set up a weekly event known as "Eaton Street Clean-up." On Thursday, October 2, 2003, the group made an official acknowledgement of its continued commitment and unveiled a sign, marking the adoption of Eaton Street. The sign is located on the corner of Eaton Street and Huxley Avenue.

Every Sunday, when school is in session, representatives of two of the College's 19 varsity athletic teams set out to clean Eaton Street. The schedule works on a rotating basis and all 19 teams are involved in the project. The project promotes commeraderie within the athletic department and each of athletic teams, but also serves as a goodwill gesture to the local community.

The Providence College Student-Athlete Advisory Board was established in the early 1990's when the NCAA mandated that each member institution formally organize a student-athlete group to provide input to athletic administrators on all areas of the student-athlete experience.

The committee is comprised of two athletes from each team. The members are responsible for representing their respective team at bi-weekly meetings run by the elected student officers. Each year the committee defines its own goals and works cooperatively with all student-athletes, department administrators and coaches to accomplish them.
