Providence, RI - Providence College Assistant Vice President for Athletics and Athletic Director John Marinatto today notified the College that he will not be accepting the position of assistant vice president for athletic fundraising. Marinatto has submitted his resignation, effective July 31, 2001.

In accepting Marinatto's resignation, Providence College President Philip A. Smith, O.P., stated, "We deeply regret that John has decided not to accept the College's offer to serve as assistant vice president for athletic fundraising. The positions of athletic director and assistant vice president for athletic fundraising are both critical components of the College's long-term plan to ensure stability and excellence in the athletic program, and we were sincerely hoping he would bring his considerable experience, talent, and contacts to the new senior-level fundraising position."

Continued Father Smith, "There is no question that John has played a significant role in the development and success of Providence College's athletics program during his 15-year tenure as athletic director, and we are grateful for his years of dedicated service. We wish John all the best in his future endeavors."

Stated Marinatto, "I thank Providence College for the opportunity it has presented me for the past 26 years. I have been a part of the College community since 1976 and it is obviously very difficult and emotional for me to make this separation. The College and athletics have been a significant part of my life and I feel I have been a major part of the success we have experienced over that time. I will always have very strong ties to the college and the people who work there." Marinatto continued, "I would like to personally thank the many former athletes, coaches and colleagues around the country, especially in the BIG EAST Conference, who have called me over the past 10 days to lend their counsel and support. Although the opportunity to remain at the College in another capacity was certainly something I considered, I feel that at this time it is best for me to make a clean break and pursue other life and career opportunities."

The College will shortly begin a national search for a new athletic director, as well as seek a candidate for the position in athletic fundraising. An interim leadership plan for the athletic department is being developed and will be in place by August 1, 2001.
