127 Student-Athletes Named to BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The BIG EAST Conference yesterday announced its 1998-99 Academic All-Star Team which included 127 Providence College student-athletes. The Friars were once again led by academic standouts Angelo Ciminiello (Sr., St. James, N.Y.) and Gladys Ganiel (Sr., Harrington, Maine).
Ciminiello, a two-time First Team GTE/CoSida Academic All-America selection, finished his academic career at Providence with a 3.73 grade point average in biology/pre-med. He also was named the BIG EAST's Scholar Athlete of the Year and the recipient of Providence College's Vincent McAndrew Award as the graduating senior athlete with the top grade point average. This year he helped the Friar baseball team to a 49-16 mark by posting a .322 batting average.
Ganiel graduated from Providence College as one of the most successful student-athletes in the history of the College. She was a six-time GTE/CoSIDA Academic All-American and was the recipient of the BIG EAST Scholar Athlete of the Year Award. Ganiel, who graduated from Providence College with a 3.99 grade point average in political science was also the female recipient of the 1999 NCAA Walter Byers Scholarship. This year she helped the PC cross country team finish 14th at the NCAA Championship.
The criteria for making the BIG EAST Academic All-Star Team is as follows:
1. minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA during the 1998-99 academic year (both semesters)
2. must participate in a BIG EAST sport and have earned a varsity letter
3. freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors are eligible
4. unlimited number of nominations per school
