Dave Gavitt To Be Inducted Into NACDA Hall Of Fame
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced today that former Providence College men's basketball coach and athletic director Dave Gavitt will be one of 18 individuals inducted into the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Hall of Fame. Gavitt and the other 17 athletic administrators will be honored on June 11-14 at NACDA's 35th Anniversary Convention in Orlando, Fla.
Gavitt, one of the top coaches ever at Providence, guided the Friars to 209 wins, including eight consecutive 20-win seasons. In 1969, Gavitt began his career as a head coach at Providence and went on to lead the Friars to five NCAA appearances and three NIT appearances. While guiding the Friars, he received four New England Coach of the Year trophies. In 1971, Gavitt was named athletic director at Providence College, a position he held until 1982 when he resigned to be the director of the BIG EAST Conference. One of his most cherished honors was being named the 1980 United States Olympic basketball coach.
After leaving the BIG EAST Conference, Gavitt became the chief executive officer of the Boston Celtics until 1994. From 1995 to 1997, he served as the president of the NCAA Foundation. He is currently chair of the Board of Trustees of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
