May 17, 2004
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced that Providence College Athletics Director Robert G. Driscoll was one of 14 athletics administrators named to positions on the NCAA Division I Management Council. The Division I Management Council is comprised of 49 athletic administrators, faculty athletics representatives and institutional administrators to whom athletics departments report or who have other significant duties regarding athletics. The Division I Management Council, which reports to the NCAA Division I Board of Directors, is empowered to make recommendations to the Board and handle responsibilities delegated to it.
Driscoll, who replaced Stan Wilcox of the BIG EAST Conference, as a league representative on the Management Council, has served as the athletics director at Providence College since his hiring on November 2, 2001. At Providence, he has created an athletics department with a student-athlete centered vision. He has improved the student-athlete advisory board, increased the student services programs for the athletes, bolstered the support staff and coaching staff and has increased the number of athletic scholarships. Driscoll also has been instrumental in the construction of a new multi-purpose athletic field, the renovations to existing facilities, the reorganization of the athletic department, strategic planning and the development of the new athletic marks. Many of these projects were paid for by the Friar Athletic Fund, which Driscoll created.
Prior to coming to Providence, Driscoll worked in athletics administration for 14 years the University of California.
Driscoll, a native of Concord, Mass., is the father of three children, Tara, Kelly and Sean. He resides in North Kingstown, R.I. with his wife, Cathy and their son, Sean.
